Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra General Manager Job Description
About the IVSO: The Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra is a community orchestra based in Peru,
IL, comprised of ~60 musicians with about half of them volunteer. We provide five concerts each
year at a venue in LaSalle-Peru, Oglesby, Ottawa or Princeton. More information can be found at

Position Summary:
The IVSO seeks a dedicated, enthusiastic and organized individual to fill the role of General
Manager, serving as liaison between membership, audience, players, the Music Director, and
the Board of Directors. Duties include personnel, managing the business timetable, internal and
external communications, coordination of venues and schedules, and oversite of concerts and
special events.
This is a part-time paid 12-month position. Time demands will vary throughout the year and
schedule flexibility is needed to accommodate the needs of the orchestra. Candidates must be
available for evening or weekend dress rehearsals, evening Board meetings, and once a year:
Friday Youth Outreach Concerts, Saturday Young Performers Competition, Young Performers
Honors Recital, and other events as needed.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
• Background or experience in performing arts, arts management, project or events
coordination
• Basic proficiency in MS Office Suite or equivalent
• Excellent organizational and communication skills
Typical Accountabilities:
• Manage overall business process:
o Develop and maintain a list of various deadlines for the season including:
rehearsal/concert schedule, email reminders, check lists
o Act as the primary contact for the IVSO
• Concert and Rehearsal scheduling and coordination:
o Work with the Concert Program Development Committee to determine and
reserve dates and venues for concerts and rehearsals, and sign site contracts.
Arrange alternatives when scheduling conflicts arise. Provide estimated budgets
for the Board.
o Work closely with the Music Director
• Personnel
o Communicate with orchestra musicians, soloists, and conductor the specific
concert/rehearsal schedule, directions and other email reminders as needed or
requested

o Hire needed personnel
o Prepare contracts or letters of intent for conductors, soloists and hired musicians,
and applicable paperwork for foreign students on school/work visas
o Serve as key orchestra contact and coordinator for players and winners of our
Young Performers Competition
o Maintain a personnel database and collect contracts/letters of intent
o Oversee weekly rehearsals
• Provide oversight of concerts and special events
o Attend concerts and dress rehearsals, serve as key liaison with building staff
regarding handling of miscellaneous stage needs (set up, lighting, sound, soloist
coordination, requests for percussion instruments, logistics, etc.)
o Provide Stage Manager lists of equipment and logistics requests
o Arrange lunch for the players between Youth Outreach Concerts and parking
logistics for players at the schools
o Arrange with Treasurer for payment and distribute checks to paid players
o Provide information as needed for publicity/marketing
• Attend Board Meetings: 6 per year and provide a General Manager’s report
• Attend Committee or other meetings as needed
• Additional duties upon request
